Film festival submissions can become expensive quickly.
Entry fees multiplied across several festivals can create another barrier for filmmakers already financing their projects independently.
That's why a current Michigan opportunity deserves attention.
Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens is accepting submissions for its 4th Annual Reel Arts Film Festival, and there is no application fee.
The call is open to short films of 10 minutes or less across all genres.
The submission deadline is September 13, 2026, and selected films are scheduled to screen at the Anton Art Center on Tuesday, October 13, from 6–9 p.m.
For a filmmaker with a completed short sitting on a hard drive, this is precisely the kind of opportunity that should trigger action.
Don't wait until September 12 to start preparing. Create a basic festival package now:
Final film file. Trailer or teaser. Poster or key artwork. Three to five production stills. Short synopsis. Director biography. Director statement. Cast and crew credits. Contact information.
Once those materials exist, submitting the next project becomes considerably easier.
There is another advantage to smaller regional festivals. Independent filmmakers often focus exclusively on major national festivals where competition can be enormous. Regional festivals can put the filmmaker in the same room as the audience.
That creates conversations. Conversations create relationships. And relationships can lead to actors, crew members, locations, collaborators, and eventually another film.
For Detroit-area filmmakers, Mount Clemens is close enough that a screening can become more than a festival credential. It can become an opportunity to physically bring supporters to see the work.
There is no guarantee a film will be selected. But with no submission fee, an eligible completed short, and a September 13 deadline, the financial barrier to trying is effectively removed.
The film already exists. Give it another opportunity to find an audience.
