Technology is not only software. It is also the way products are designed, information is presented, transportation systems work, physical spaces function, and people interact with the systems around them.
That makes the upcoming Detroit Month of Design particularly relevant to Detroit's technology and creator communities.
The 16th annual festival begins Tuesday, September 1, and runs through September 30, 2026. Produced by Design Core Detroit, this year's theme is “Design Moves the Future.”
More than 100 events are planned across Detroit, including exhibitions, product launches, workshops, talks, tours, and installations. Programming focuses on mobility and transportation, sustainability, materials, and community-led design.
For independent creators, technology and design are becoming increasingly difficult to separate.
A website needs design. An app needs design. A physical product needs design. An AI service needs an interface. A media company needs a recognizable visual system. Even an automated business workflow has to be designed around the people who will use it.
Detroit creators interested in AI, websites, digital products, fabrication, transportation technology, or entrepreneurship can use Month of Design as more than an arts festival. It can become a month-long research and networking opportunity.
One particularly relevant exhibition opens September 11 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The program examines technological systems that shape civic life and uses participation and experimentation to explore more equitable technology.
On September 17, Eastern Market After Dark turns the district into a free, all-ages creative festival. Organizers say last year's event attracted more than 33,000 attendees and featured 125 artists and designers.
There is a business lesson here too. Independent creators often separate themselves into categories: musician, filmmaker, programmer, or designer. The stronger opportunity may be at the intersection.
A musician needs technology. A technology startup needs storytelling. A filmmaker needs graphic design. A designer needs marketing.
Detroit Month of Design puts many of those disciplines in the same citywide ecosystem for 30 days.
Reality2Reel's recommendation: don't just attend. Look for collaborators.
